Thai Massage
History
Thai Massage is a unique and powerful massage therapy combining acupressure, gentle stretching, and applied yoga. It is based off of Chinese medical massage, Tui Na, and the Ayurvedic traditions. It was founded 2,500 years ago by Dr. Jivika Kumarbaccha, a Tibetan medicine man. Dr. Kumarbaccha was a contemporary and friend of the Buddha and doctor to the King of India. For 100 of years, Thai Massage was passed down through the Buddhist monasteries in Thailand. It has only recently been open to study by westerners. Joshua was fortunate to have studied in Thailand with Master Pinchet Bonthoome, one of the original teachers of the famous Old Medicine Hospital in Chiang Mai.
Overview
Thai Massage is often described as passive yoga. Through a combination of joint manipulation, soft tissue massage, acupressure, and stretching, it is a rhythmic and harmonious sequence of flowing movements. The practitioner uses his/her knees, hands, elbows and body weight to stimulate the energy lines. By applying pressure along sen (energy) lines, Thai Massage helps remove physical and energetic blocks in the body. As blocks along the sen lines release, we become more relaxed, energized and free from stiffness and pain.
